What Does a Cancer Screening Involve?

Cancer screening is in place for several types of cancer in the UK; screening programs, including breast, bowel and cervical cancer are currently available to the public.

Screening programmes are in place to identify early warning signs of cancer; they cannot prevent cancer but they ensure that cases are detected as early as possible when treatment is likely to be successful.

Breast cancer screening is available to all women aged between 50 and 70 years old; the screening session involves having a mammogram, which produces detailed X-ray images of the breasts.

When you go for breast cancer screening, you will be asked to strip to your waist and an X-ray unit is used to X-ray one breast at a time. The test is quick and it should not be painful; before you leave, the screening staff will tell you when your results will be available.

Cervical cancer screening is available to women aged between 25 and 49 years old in England (the age limit is lower in Scotland and Wales); the screening test is known as a cervical smear test and it is carried out every three years. When you arrive for your test, you will be asked to strip from the waist down and lie on a couch; you will then be asked to raise and open your legs and the nurse will insert an instrument called a speculum, which is used to take a sample of the cells in the cervix; the sample is then sent away for analysis. Your practice nurse will tell you when to expect your results; you should receive a letter within 2 weeks of your test.

Bowel cancer screening is available to everyone aged between 60 and 69 years old; however, there are plans to extend the age range. The screening test involves sending a card with three samples of stools to a laboratory for screening; it is known as a fecal occult blood test and it is used to detect hidden blood in the stools, which may indicate bowel cancer. Patients receive the testing kit in the post.
